dual booting XP and Windows 7

This mini guide is for installing Windows XP _after_ Windows 7 has been installed.
We sometimes want to dual boot between the new and old OS.

If you have a powerful enough machine you can use Windows XP Mode with virtual PC.

Note: works only with Win7 Pro and up. If you have Windows Home edition, save yourself time and bandwidth, XP mode won't work.

1. Install XP on the second partition. The system will then boot directly to XP. Make sure you have the ntldr file on the root directory. If it's not there copy it from the i386 folder of your XP installer disc.

2. Boot from the Win7 installer CD and run repair.
Choose Startup Repair
reboot
The system will then boot directly to Win7

3. Start -> Accessories -> (right click) Command Prompt. Choose run as administrator

c:\> bcdedit /create {ntldr} /d "Windows XP"

c:\> bcdedit /set {ntldr} device partition=D:

c:\> bcdedit /set {ntldr} path \ntldr

c:\> bcdedit /displayorder {ntldr} /addlast

4. Reboot. You should now see a menu to choose between Windows 7 and XP.

#whoami

My name is Romel Flores, and I currently work as a developer for one of the top IT and outsourcing company. I work with a team of international developers and we usually collaborate online.

I was the head of Technical Consulting for Enterprise Project Management at a company that specializes in Project Management, Consulting and Training. I have taken the lead role in the deployment of EPM (Enterprise Project Management) systems for ABS-CBN and San Miguel Corp. I have been part of a team that developed software program for pharmaceutical promo materials monitoring and have developed windows based software applications using C# and VB.net. I have also worked on backend software for on-line applications using PHP running on the LAMP(Linux Apache MySQL PHP) platform. I have also conducted trainings on project management and Linux installation and administration publicly and in-house at companies such as ABS-CBN, San Miguel Corp, Safeway Phils and Hershey Phils.

I have also fulfilled the role of Events support. In fulfilling both roles, I have developed the aptitude as project manager for software development, system deployment and events. I also installed and currently maintain internal and external servers that run on Linux and Windows Server operating systems.

I have worked on bleeding edge technology and as such relied heavily on experimentation and documentation to learn and make the technology work. This mode of learning requires one to be a fast learner and have firm understanding of underlying technologies and concepts. Such is the case when I learned Linux, Windows NT Server 3.5, MS Enterprise Project Management solution and PHP3.

I have worked on my Microsoft certification for Windows NT Server 4.0 by setting up a simulated environment of the different scenarios and got a perfect score at the exam.

I also have contributed on some of the documentation like when we tried to connect a diskless Novell Netware workstation to a Linux server.

The Linux Intranet Server HOWTO (http://tldp.org/HOWTO/Intranet-Server-HOWTO-8.html)

I have also developed the courseware for the Microsoft Project training that we teach as part of our project management training program.
